Thousands of holes

Edible Wood Farm Journal: 2026 (3)

And ….. that was log number 59. Time to call it quits. After a day of drilling an average of 60 holes per oak log, it was not difficult to calculate that the result was almost 3600 holes. And that meant that about 3600 shiitake plugs were also hammered into the holes.

Fortunately there was help from a group of 15 Herenboeren / CSA city farmers who, once the homemade apple cake had been eaten, worked consistently to get the job done at the Edible Wood Farm in Gaanderen.

Our agreement was that they could take one third of the logs back to their farm as a form of payment. A fine way to share people power and good quality oak logs and inoculation material.
