Tiny trunks

Edible Wood Farm Journal: 2025 (12)

No more oyster mushroom logs. A depleted supply of velvet shank logs. All sold. Both sorts of edible mushrooms grow well on poplar logs and luckily enough there are lots op poplar plots throughout the countryside. One of these plots was in the process of being felled begin December and I was able to arrange to pick up a couple of cubic meters. The branches from the crowns are the best parts because of the suitable diameter (at least they can be moved by hand once cut into meter lengths) and also because it is the youngest wood. The forest workers can sell these logs for a little more money than as woodchips or scrapwood.

Even though the branches look like giant toothpicks next to the massive trunks of the felled trees I was kept busy a couple of days with sorting out the branches, cutting the good bits (damaged parts are not welcome), getting the logs in and out of the car and transporting them to the Edible Wood Farm. A lot of work for a relative small volume but it is enough for the winter months because the logs have to be inoculated as well. Just enough work to keep me busy outdoors and to build up the stock just ahead of the major inoculation period in March – April.
